The reasons for this are economic (the company is investing heavily in UK studio space) and sentimental – the Tolkien estate preferred the series to be filmed in the country that originally inspired the writer. While the first season was filmed in New Zealand, Amazon has decided to base production for the second and subsequent series in the UK.
